Welcome to Green Haworth’s Literacy Curriculum

Green Haworth’s Literacy Curriculum is designed to equip every child with the foundational skills they need to become confident, thoughtful and articulate readers and writers.

Within our Church of England school, we are committed to enabling all children to achieve their very best in a nurturing, supportive and inclusive environment, where each learner is valued and encouraged to flourish.

Our curriculum is carefully sequenced so that knowledge and skills are developed in a purposeful and progressive order.

Children begin by securing the essential building blocks of literacy, including phonics (using the Phonics Shed scheme), handwriting, spelling, vocabulary, grammar and sentence construction. These core elements are revisited and strengthened over time, ensuring that learning is embedded and applied with increasing independence and sophistication.

Alongside this secure skills-based approach, we place great emphasis on high-quality texts that are both exciting and challenging. Carefully selected books, poems and extracts broaden children’s literary experiences, stimulate curiosity and deepen comprehension.

Through rich discussion and explicit teaching, pupils are supported to analyse language, explore themes and respond with clarity and insight. This enables them not only to read accurately, but also to read with understanding, imagination and purpose.

High expectations underpin every aspect of literacy at Green Haworth. We expect all pupils to engage fully, take pride in their work and strive for excellence. Tasks are adapted and scaffolded where necessary, while maintaining ambitious expectations for every learner. In this way, all children are challenged appropriately and supported to make strong progress.

Through sequential learning, inspiring texts and consistently high standards, our Literacy Curriculum nurtures confident communicators who are well prepared for the next stage of their education and for life beyond the classroom.
